Beyoncé’s Other, Other Favorite Designer

beyonce sarah perpich brian lichtenberg

By now, most fashion watchers are aware that Beyoncé is a dyed-in-the-graphic-geometric -wool fan of Gareth Pugh and of Thierry Mugler, now that the latter designer will be creative- directing and costuming her upcoming tour. But B’s latest video for her song Diva—which some liken to a reprise of Pugh’s Spring 2009 show —also features the work of 25-year-old designer Brian Lichtenberg. The patchwork bodysuit and matching lace leggings (pictured here) that the designer custom-made for Mrs. Jay-Z also echo his Spring 2009 collection. But Lichtenberg isn’t exactly a newbie when it comes to the wardrobing needs of pop stars. M.I.A. reportedly flipped over his hologram leggings and now owns several pairs; the designer was even an extra in her Bucky Done Gun video. “Beyoncé came up with the idea [of the bodysuit], as she wanted to dance in it for her music video,” explains Lichtenberg. The designer, who shows at L.A. Fashion Week, has an aesthetic that’s futuristic, bold, and graphic—which is, of course, right up Beyoncé’s currently avant-garde fashion alley. Lichtenberg’s collection includes clothing and jewelry in collaboration with L.A.-based accessories duo Alex & Chloe. He has also teamed up with Franc Fernandez on a range of sharply architectural hats (imagine what Grace Jones’ millinery collection would look like), which Beyoncé did wear for Diva, though the segment ended up on the cutting-room floor. For more on Lichtenberg, go to www.brianlichtenberg.com.

Panda Kunst, Tees That Talk

panda kunst tees that talk sarah perpich

It’s arguable that the message T-shirt hasn’t recovered from its Britney Spears associations. Twenty-five year-old actor, artist, and now designer Louis-Marie de Castelbajac may be on his way to changing that. Founded in December 2007, de Castelbajac’s T-shirt line Panda Kunst is ready to break onto the streets and take the stores by storm. The multi-hyphenate French native, who is now based in Los Angeles, has recently been meeting with stores and showrooms to make that happen. The collection’s organic cotton T-shirts are meant to reflect the designer’s manifesto of making culture accessible. The son of designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac has clearly inherited his father’s witty inclinations. The T-shirts are emblazoned with wink-nudge proclamations of the philosophical (”Thank God I’m an Atheist”) and cultural (”Bauhaus is my House”) variety. Panda Kunst tees, for both men and women, are available on his Web site, www.pandakunst.com for around $35 each.

Going Social – VMagazine.com

In Hong Kong, Dee Poon throws open the doors of her chic boutique-cum-retail experiment

vmagazine Dysemevas Hong Kong

Things might not be looking quite as rosy on our shoes, but out East, the Chinese retail landscape continues to fill itself out. Dysemevas, a six-week concept pop-up shop, opens this week and aims to showcase design talent from China and Hong Kong while offering shoppers a unique cultural experience that encourages play and exploration. The site is slated to open its doors at 254 Hollywood Road in Hong Kong on November 11th and then move to Beijing this spring. Conceived by Dee Poon (daughter of retail tycoon Dixon Poon and Marjorie Yang, CEO and chairwoman of garment manufacturing Esquel Group) and designed by Mathias Woo (2004 Hong Kong Institute of Architecture prize winner), Dysemevas is conceived in part as a social experiment aimed at getting beyond the tired dragon and phoenix clichés. “[This is the] new China—the fun and young and interesting and kooky side of the country, which is full of amazing creatives and independents,” says Poon. “We want to attract people who not only see how far we have come, but how far we can go.” Ten designers from China and Hong Kong have contributed an eclectic mix of clothing, fine jewelry, watches, ceramics, and other lifestyle products. Standouts include Zhang Da, Among Strangers, Rocky Candy, Lin Jing, The Year of (a denim brand based around Chinese astrology), and JiJi, who makes “Hi Panda” T-shirts that Poon thinks are sure to be bestsellers. Dysemevas patrons will also be invited to activities hosted in its adjacent “Playroom,” which was inspired by buzzing Asian street markets. The cheekily named “Bored Games,” “Beauty Shop,” “Coffee and Cigarettes,” and “Cut and Paste” parties are all on the Dysemevas schedule, ensuring that the store will be as much of a destination for socializing as it is for shopping. “I hope people can just hang out, mingle, and have some fun,” Poon says. WWD Accessories: in the mix "Dark Angels"

Alexis Bittar, Mizuki and Avindy Gothic jewelry

Published February 2008

Gold and silver are always in fashion. Now Alexis Bittar, Mizuki and Avindy are incorporating blackened and oxidized metals in their jewelry collections. Think Gothic gone girly.

Alexis Bittar’s current collection continues his themes of Lucite, Element and Miss Haversham. However, the look evolves with two uses of the oxidized metals sterling silver and gunmetal. The first creates “a grunge, punk and bohemian feel,” he explains. The latter evokes the Eighties and has a slicker sensibility than oxidized silver alone.

Among Mizuki’s many collections, including Soho, Lux, Cool, Candy, Boho and Couture, her Rock collection most intimately reflects this trend with black diamonds, yellow gold, cape amethyst and oxidized silver. Mizuki describes her Rock pieces as “edgy but warm. [They] explore the world of mystery.”

For Avindy’s mother-daughter design team of Avril and Cindy Joffe, the oxidation process helps to achieve a romantic vintage look by toning down brightness.

“Mixing a black or oxidized chain with gold jewelry…is the ultimate contrast to shine and sparkle. It makes a statement,” says Janet Goldman, chairman and founder of Fragments, a New York-based boutique and showroom.

WWD Accessories: in the mix “Classical Style”

Lizalieb Créations French Vintage JewelryLizalieb Créations French Vintage Jewelry
Published July 2007

More than a mash-up of its designer’s name, is a fusion of French vintage and Manhattan modernity. Whether working from her studio in Paris or New York, Elizabeth Gottlieb blends the cultures and trends of the two cities into her beaded costume jewelry. “To me, Paris is the eternal beauty, but New York City is turned to modernity and the future,” she says. Gottlieb, who currently employs just two other designers, is expanding her New York presence to fulfill what she says is American women’s desire for a certain je ne sais quoi in their outfits.Crafted from silver, gold vermeil and vintage Murano glass beads, among other materials, the jewelry, she says, “adds a personal touch to your own character, which makes the whole difference.”

The elegant designs are as varied as Gottlieb’s past. Born in France and raised in Vienna, Gottlieb trained as a classical pianist before transitioning to music management and eventually, in 2002, launching the Lizalieb line. Today, her creations are found in French boutiques, at Paris’ Place Vendôme, at Mirabelle and White Tulip in New York and on lizaleibcreations.com. She also holds showcases and trunk shows at Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Retail prices range from $300 for a pair of earrings to $900 for a multistrand choker like the one recently purchased by Catherine Zeta-Jones.

WWD Accessories: in the mix "Beirn, Baby, Beirn"

pic3oct07.jpg

Published October 2007

It is less than a year old, but the Beirn handbag collection is already on fire. Rita Overzat and her two daughters, Ali Trier and Jenna Overzat, dreamed up the collection on a trip to Bali, where they concluded that the only way to find the luxurious luggage they wanted was to make it themselves. The trio handled everything from the designs to the marketing, advertising and product placement. Even the Beirn moniker (Which is Ali and Jenna’s middle name) is a nod to the fact that this is a homegrown family business.

The Beirn collection includes the popular Jenna hobo for $310 at retail, zip clutches of various sizes ranging from $105 to $150, a traveler’s tote for $575 and baby bag Emma for $295. The bags are available in 25 colors, all glossed over with Mowilex to enhance their vividness and richness. Each piece is made of Indonesian water snake and is lined with canvas in juxtaposing colors and accented with a brass snap and zipper.

The guiding force behind the Beirn collection is Rita Overzat’s belief in simplified luxury at an affordable price. “I don’t think price defines luxury,” says Rita Overzat, a former executive at Saks Fifth Avenue and Badgley Mischka, and current president and founder of New York-based luxury showroom The RJM Group. “It’s how you wear it and the way you interpret it yourself.”

Beirn bags can be found in more than 29 boutiques and shops around the country, from Searle, Plaza Too and Calypso in New York to Fred Segal in California, as well as in Mexico and Turks and Caicos. Since launching earlier this year, sales have topped $300,000.

Going forward, the three entrepreneurs plan to build on the success of the women’s handbag line to design belts and small leather goods, and venture into the gentlemen’s handbag market as well.

Daily News: Three Women Ask Their Guys for Honest Fashion Opinions

new york daily news logo stylish sarah perpich

By Jane Ridley
Published Thursday, February 7th 2008

daily news stylish sarah valentine day clothes

There’s nothing more infuriating than showing up for a date, only for him to wrinkle his nose and dis your outfit – but men and women tend to have very different ideas about what looks good and what doesn’t.

We asked style expert Sarah Perpich, a personal shopper at Henri Bendel in Manhattan, to pick three Valentine’s looks for three different New York City women – clothes that showcase the hottest trends for spring and each woman’s personality.

Then we asked each woman’s other half to give an honest opinion. The results: read on.

1a-vday.jpg
Mona Thabet, 23, a newspaper circulation representative, from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, has been dating Stennie Hall (above), 32, a retail services manager, of nearby Sheepshead, since they met at work five years ago. Mona says: “I like wearing colorful, risque outfits as long as they’re comfortable, but Stennie doesn’t like me going out with my girlfriends in anything revealing. It’s fine if I’m with him, however. Otherwise, he would probably tape a jacket around me! My favorite is the cute top and pants, because they’d look great to go dancing in.” Read on to see what Stennie thinks of the outfits.

1-vday.jpg Stennie’s verdict: COCKTAIL DRESS: “Wow! That’s a definite head-turner, and I love it because it shows off Mona’s whole physique. I’d be proud to have her on my arm wearing a dress like that. I wouldn’t have a problem if she wore it out with me. But, if she’s alone, I’d worry because I don’t think other people would be respecting her personality.” Rating: 9/10

Stennie’s verdict: SASSY SKIRT SUIT: “It’s very neat and presentable, and my mom would definitely approve. It’s a nice Valentine’s outfit, and I love the red. But the blouse doesn’t do much for her figure because it’s too baggy.” Rating 6/10

Stennie’s verdict: CASUAL CHIC: “It looks like she is going to work and is way too casual for a Valentine’s date. The bagginess of the top takes the sexy right out of it, and the pants are too business-casual.” Rating: 5/10

2a-vday.jpg
Christine Taylor, 37, a freelance photographer, lives with boyfriend James Kloiber (above), 30, an art director, on Manhattan’s upper East Side. They met online three years ago. Christine says: “I always tend to wear black, brown and gray because they’re versatile and don’t attract a lot of attention. Luckily, James takes an interest in what I wear and has a good sense of style. His favorite outfit will probably be the pink dress because he often wishes I would show off my figure more. I’d love it worn by someone else, but it’s too risque for my tastes. I prefer the pants and top because they’re comfortable and sexy.”

2-vday.jpgJames’ verdict: COCKTAIL DRESS: “It looks a little hoochie and doesn’t really flatter her curves, although it shows off Christine’s tattoos very nicely. I like it, but she could definitely use a bra.” Rating: 7/10

James’ verdict: SASSY SKIRT SUIT: “It makes her look a lot older than she is and like a politician’s wife. The skirt’s a great shape and fit, but the jacket is boxy. I don’t like the print blouse with the red color, as it looks dated.” Rating: 7/10.

James’ verdict: CASUAL CHIC: “I like the drape over the shoulders and the way the top comes together at the waist. The pants are flattering and look modern. This is the best out of the three because it’s a lot classier.” Rating: 9/10.

3a-vday.jpg
Shayna Stoyko, 34, a copy editor from Brooklyn Heights, has been dating TV producer Howard Sebold (above), 44, from Park Slope, Brooklyn, since last April after meeting him on Match.com. Shayna says: “I am used to dressing to look cute rather than overtly sexy because I’m more of an observer than a “look at me” kind of person. Howard doesn’t pay huge attention to my sense of style but compliments me a lot, which is great. He’ll like the pants and top because, like me, he’ll think they’re jazzy, funky and fabulous.”

3-vday.jpgHoward’s verdict: COCKTAIL DRESS: “She would never wear something that low-cut, but it’d be great if she did! It shows off her figure beautifully, although coral isn’t my favorite color, and I’d prefer it in blue from the same palette. It’s very sexy and my jaw would hit the floor if she showed up like this.” Rating: 8/10

Howard’s verdict: SASSY SKIRT SUIT: “This has an office vibe and, despite the funky jacket, is not very sexy. The animal-print blouse reminds me of Bon Jovi and the ’80s-style pussy bow is a no-no for me. It looks like she came straight to the date from work.” Rating: 7/10

Howard’s verdict: CASUAL CHIC: “Shayna looks great in terms of urban sophistication. It’s very sophisticated and nothing like I’ve seen her wear before. The top is flattering but reminds me a little of a Mexican poncho. It’s more suited for lunch than a nighttime date, but very cute.” Rating: 8/10

THE OUTFITS:

COCKTAIL DRESS: Herve Leger deep V bondage dress, $1,258. Sarah Perpich says: “I call this the sexy, magic bondage dress because it’s like scubawear that sucks in the butt, pushes up the boobs and looks great on practically everyone. Baby pink and lilac are very big this season.”

SASSY SKIRT SUIT: Diane von Furstenberg jacket, $425; Michael Kors leopard-print shirt, $698; Michael Kors pencil skirt, $498. Perpich says: “I love the cosmopolitan working-women’s look, and the pencil skirt is as huge for spring as it was for fall. The chiffon blouse with tie gives a feminine, frilly feel and the red jacket adds sophistication, especially for Valentine’s.”

CASUAL CHIC: Missoni batwing top, $838; Diane von Furstenberg Gilligan pants, $275 Perpich says: “Wide-leg high-rise pants continue to be big, and navy is always big for spring. I loved to play with the volume around the shoulder area of the Missoni top because it’s very fancy and flirty.”
